The Modern Language Association is hiring a collaborative, detail-oriented developer to help us maintain and evolve our digital infrastructure — including our CiviCRM-based membership systems and our WordPress-powered web properties.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain custom CiviCRM extensions
- Integrate and support WordPress plugins and themes
- Implement front-end features using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (ES6+)
- Build and maintain REST APIs for partner integrations
- Write shell scripts for routine maintenance and deployment
- Work with technology partners to support and maintain servers and related infrastructure
- Monitor system performance and resolve reported errors
- Manage identity workflows including SSO integrations
Required Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree or higher is required.
- Minimum of two years’ development experience in CiviCRM and WordPress
- Demonstrated ability to write clean, maintainable code
- Ability to prioritize, troubleshoot, and complete multiple tasks
- Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and nontechnical colleagues
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior working experience in nonprofits, academic departments, or membership organizations
- Familiarity with AWS services: EC2, RDS, Redis, OpenSearch,WAF
- Familiarity with GitHub workflows and CI/CD practices
- Experience implementing Google Analytics
- Knowledge of SQL performance tuning
- Experience with PHP frameworks (e.g., Symfony)
This is a full-time, hybrid position. Some work can be done remotely, but there is a requirement to work on-site as needed at our office in downtown Manhattan. You must be able to work legally in the United States. The annual salary is $85,000. The MLA provides generous vacation and sick time, flexible work hours, a 403(b) retirement plan, and individual health and dental plans with minimal shared premium cost.
