About The Role
As a Frontend Engineer on the Technology Team, you will play a key role in shaping the user experience across Courthouse News’ public-facing websites and internal tools. Your work will focus on building responsive, accessible, and performant front-end applications using React.js and related technologies. You will collaborate closely with product managers, back-end developers, and designers to deliver seamless interfaces that meet the needs of our diverse user base.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain modern, responsive, and accessible front-end applications using React.js, Redux Toolkit, and React Router
- Customize and build CMS front ends with WordPress, including Divi Builder, Gutenberg, and custom plugins
- Integrate and develop RESTful APIs, including custom WordPress APIs and headless CMS solutions
- Collaborate with product designers and stakeholders to translate designs into high-quality UI components
- Participate in Agile workflows such as sprint planning, retrospectives, and backlog grooming
- Use React Query for data fetching and SASS/SCSS for styling
- Work with Azure Functions and Firebase Cloud Messaging for serverless front-end integrations
- Contribute to and maintain component libraries with Storybook
- Conduct quality assurance testing and maintain UI test scripts using tools like Ghost Inspector
- Utilize Swagger and Postman for API testing and documentation
- Manage source code and collaboration through Git and Azure DevOps
- Create and maintain technical documentation to support development and cross-team collaboration
- Uphold coding standards, testing protocols, and deployment best practices
Qualifications
- Minimum 4 years of professional experience building web applications with React.js and modern JavaScript (ES6+)
- Strong proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, SASS/SCSS, and mobile-first responsive design principles
- Experience integrating with RESTful APIs and working within component-driven front-end architectures
- Familiarity with WordPress CMS including themes, builders (Divi), and custom plugin development
- Experience with Git version control and Agile development methodologies
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative, problem-solving mindset
- Commitment to continuous learning, innovation, and growth
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with KendoUI React, Redux Toolkit, and React Query
- Knowledge of custom WordPress development, headless CMS architectures, and static site generators like Hugo
- Exposure to cloud services such as Azure Functions, Azure DevOps, and Firebase
- Proficiency with API tools like Swagger, Postman, and transactional email platforms such as SendGrid
- Familiarity with front-end testing frameworks and component documentation tools like Ghost Inspector and Storybook
- Experience with MySQL, Node.js, Elasticsearch, and analytics tools such as FullStory, Heap, or Datadog
- Familiarity with help desk software such as Zendesk or Freshdesk
Work Location
Candidates must be authorized to work and reside in the United States. While onsite work in Pasadena, California is preferred several days per week, remote work arrangements will also be considered.
