Position Summary
The Communications Specialist plays a key role in supporting consistent, high-quality communication across Service Oklahoma. This position helps create, edit, and manage content for both internal and external audiences — ensuring accuracy, alignment, and clarity. The ideal candidate is a strong writer and editor who can turn complex information into customer-friendly messaging. This role supports email campaigns, public awareness efforts, internal communications, and social media response, while helping ensure messaging is consistent, timely, and aligned with agency voice and values.
Position Responsibilities

- Writes, edits, and formats public-facing content, including newsletters, email updates, website copy, and awareness campaign materials.
- Coordinates email and text campaigns through govDelivery, including list management and performance tracking.
- Collaborates with internal teams and subject matter experts to develop accurate, timely and accessible messaging.
- Supports execution of public awareness campaigns, from asset development to logistics and scheduling.
- Provides editing and formatting support for internal communications as needed.
- Serves as backup for social media scheduling, content management and Google review responses, while supporting escalated customer service or constituent inquiries with aligned messaging and tone.
- Assists in managing content calendars and coordinates deadlines across communication projects.
- Embeds with agency teams as assigned to develop content that reflects expert insight and agency brand.
- Collects analytics from email and digital tools to inform and improve communication efforts.
- Other duties as assigned.
This position may be expected to cross-train in other sections of their division and perform the job duties in each section, based on the needs of the agency.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills across digital and print formats.
- Ability to translate technical information into citizen-facing content.
- Familiarity with AP Style preferred.
- Skilled in managing and editing content created by others.
- Knowledge of email marketing platforms (e.g., govDelivery, MailChimp, etc.).
- Understanding of communications best practices and brand alignment.
- Basic knowledge of design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Express) and content formatting.
- Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple deadlines.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills.
- Flexibility and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to manage high work volume, shifting priorities, and deadline-driven tasks.
- Experience with content management systems (e.g., WordPress or Asana).
- Organizational habits and ability to work independently or collaboratively.
Education & Experience
The preferred minimum qualifications for this position are:
- A bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, and public relations
- OR four (4) years of experience in content management systems (e.g., WordPress or Asana), social media management systems (e.g. Hootsuite or Sprout Social), or a closely related field,
- OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
- The schedule for this position may vary and require flexibility, including some early or late shifts, weekends, and occasional overtime, based on the needs of the agency.
- This position may require occasional travel. The employee must be willing and able to perform all job-related travel. State vehicles may be available, but reliable transportation may be required for local travel.
- This position works in a comfortable office setting with a computer for a large percentage of the workday.
- This position requires employees to be able to stand up to eight hours a day and lift 10-50 pounds on a regular basis, with assistance as needed.
